If there had never been a "lost covid season" it is possible that 2021 Delaware Valley University graduate Alexis Martin (on left) would not have shown in the Region 2 hunter seat alumni divisions during the 2021-22 season. Martin took part in the alumni classes last season to compensate for the lost season her senior year. Martin led the Region 2 alumni flat and fences standings and went on to finish first in both divisions at Zones on April 9th. Martin and her mother Stacy are seen here on the floor of the Equine Arena at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania after Martin was third in alumni flat and tenth in alumni fences at 2022 IHSA Nationals on May 7th.

Sal Coniglio (on left) accompanied his mother Joanne (on right) to 2022 IHSA Nationals. His mother was known as Joanne Stagliano when she rode for Delaware Valley College (as the school was known then) during the early 1990's. This season Coniglio finished fourth in Alumni Western Horsemanship at the Reedsville, West Virginia Semifinal on March 20th which meant she advanced to IHSA Nationals in the division. Coniglio was fifth in the division at Nationals on May 7th. For the 2022-23 season the IHSA announced that this will be the final season that the IHSA will offer alumni classes, and those classes will be offered only up through the Zones and Semifinal shows. There will be championship classes for the three divisions held at 2022 Nationals, but those classes to determine the national champion will be held at the Alumni Tournament of Champions in Gladstone, New Jersey a few weeks after 2023 IHSA Nationals in Lexington, Kentucky in May.
There were even a few Region 2 undergraduate riders at 2022 IHSA Nationals and one of them is Hannah Wright-Riley of Delaware Valley University (on right, with Aggies western coach and former University of Findlay rider Andrew Wolf). From Villanova, Pennsylvania, Wright-Riley helped Delaware Valley to their first western Region Title since 2018 (really a Zone title, since the region is made up of four different hunter seat regions). At the Reedsville, West Virginia semifinal Wright-Riley was second in individual open western horsemanship to advance to Nationals in that division. Wright-Riley was also the top open western rider in her region, securing a ride in the Individual AQHA High Point Open Rider competition at Nationals as well.
There were even a few Region 2 non-Delaware Valley riders at 2022 IHSA Nationals. Arcadia University had two riders at IHSA Nationals. Seen here at Region 2 hunter seat Regionals on March 13th are Knights teammates Mychajla Motuz (on left) and Sydney Doll after they took first and second, respectively, in introductory equitation. Both found themselves in Harrisburg in May but Not in the same discipline. Doll, at the time a junior from Norristown, Pennsylvania was third at Zones in the same division right behind Motuz - at the time a junior from Toms River, New Jersey - on April 9th but on March 20th Doll was the blue ribbon winner in individual beginner western horsemanship at Semifinals. So both went forward but not to face off against each other for a third time in the post-season. Arcadia will co-host the second hunter seat show of 2022-23 at Delaware Valley with the Aggies on October 15th.
Taylor Staub of Franklin and Marshall College (on right) never led the Region 2 hunter seat open rider standings until she pulled ahead by two points at the final regular season show of 2021-22. From Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Staub is seen here with Diplomats head coach Erika Kurtz at Regionals (hosted by Delaware Valley) on March 13th after winning the individual open flat class. Franklin and Marshall are scheduled to host the fourth Region 2 hunter seat show of the fall at Linden Hall though it should be noted Kurtz has a new facility of her own that might serve as their home base.
There was more than one rider from Toms River, New Jersey entered at hunter seat Regionals last March. Kylie Schoelen of Delaware Valley University (on right, with her mother) holds the Jack Benson Trophy which is awarded to the winner of individual open over fences at Region 2 Regionals. Schoelen, who was one of five open riders to hold the ever-changing lead in the region's open rider standings over the course of the season, hails from Toms River. Schoelen, who will be a senior this season, finished 2021-22 with a fifth at Zones in individual open fences in Long Valley, New Jersey on April 9th.
Four of the five limit flat riders qualified for 2022 Region 2 Regionals competed for West Chester University and two of them advanced to Zones. Golden Rams head coach Wendy Myers stands in the middle between Jenna Taylor (on left. who was second in the division) and Laura Konizer (who was also second in limit fences which explains both a blue and a red in her possession). Coincidentally from West Chester, Pennsylvania, Taylor would finish ahead of Konizer in the division at Zones. Taylor was third to Konizer's seventh. Konizer, from Landenberg, Pennsylvania is a senior this season and Taylor a junior, so both have a chance to return to the post-season. West Chester is scheduled to host two shows this fall, with the first of them on October 23rd. Will the Golden Rams break their yearly hold on second place behind Delaware Valley that stretches back to the 2011-12 season?
