If you saw the year-end Zone 3, Region 4 hunter seat open rider standings it would appear there was a tie for high point rider. Kelly Carr of the University of Scranton (not pictured) and Grace McEneaney of Lafayette College (on left, with Leopards head coach Kelly Poff) both finished the 2021-22 season with 72 points. However it should be noted that McEneaney missed parts of three shows due to riding-related injuries, one of which kept her from being able to jump at any of the post-season shows. McEneaney was only a sophomore in 2021-22 so she will have another two seasons to try to claim the top regional open prize. Meanwhile Poff's 'Pards won the hunter seat Region Title for the first time since 2018 and the seventh time in program history.

Lafayette stopped Rutgers University's two-year run of region titles but it should be noted that the Scarlet Knights did not have an open rider during the fall of 2021. If their card is full then expect Rutgers to be a force from opening day on. Though she graduated at the end of last season, Sonia Mersich (pictured) was second for the Scarlet Knights in the largest class of any at Regionals last May 3rd. From Metuchen, New Jersey, Mersich earned the reserve high point ribbon in a novice equitation class of nine riders and closed out her senior year finishing seventh out of ten in the division at Zone 3 Zones in Long Valley, New Jersey on April 9th.
One wonders if he was named for the dog in "The Wizard of Oz" or an 1980's pop group. In any event "Toto" stands tall alongside Tara Herzog of Bloomsburg University (center) and her mother at Region 4 Regionals in Northampton, Pennsylvania last May 3rd. From West Chester, Pennsylvania, Herzog (with help from Toto) won the limit flat that day. Bloomsburg will host the fourth show of the new season on October 16th.
Second to Herzog at Regionals was Isabel Porter of Lehigh University (on right, with Mountain Hawks head coach Marisa Mangiamelli). From Mill Valley, California, Porter was part of a Lehigh team that stayed in the team race past the halfway mark, eventually finishing second overall. Porter finished her freshman year by placing eighth at Zones in individual limit flat at the Centenary University Equestrian Center in Long Valley, New Jersey on April 9th.
Shannon Washburn of East Stroudsburg University (on right) extended her season past Zone 3 Zones on April 9th. From Shoreham, New York, Washburn followed up her second in limit fences on April 3rd with another second in the same division in the Centenary outdoor ring six days later. Somewhat unusually Zone 3 Zones was partially held indoors (all the flat classes) and then outdoors in the afternoon (all the over fences classes). Head coach Pat Speziale (on left) was very happy with Washburn's effort. Washburn, who will be a senior in 2022-23, was the only Region 4 undergraduate rider in an individual class to place inside the top two at Zones and thus compete at IHSA Nationals.
However at Zones not one but two Region 4 alumni riders placed second to also advance through to IHSA Nationals. Marissa Zondag of Moravian College (not pictured) was second in alumni fences and Emma Wilson of Lafayette College (pictured) was second in alumni flat. A 2021 graduate of the Easton, Pennsylvania school, Wilson is seen here on opening day Fall 2021 after winning the alumni fences. At Nationals in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on May 7th, Wilson was ninth in alumni flat, which made her the only Region 4 rider to earn a top-ten ribbon at IHSA Nationals last season. During the 2021-22 season Wilson was commuting all the way from Connecticut to each of the Region 4 shows. In 2022-23 Wilson might turn up riding alumni in one of the New England regions.
It will be a fine day for us when we finally get a photo of all three of the Fine sisters. But for now this photo of two of the three will have to do. Eva Fine of the University of Scranton (on left, whose first name is pronounced "Aay-Vah") was making her IHSA debut while 2013 Scranton graduate Kayla Fine (on right) was entered in both alumni classes when this photo was taken in Bedminster, New Jersey on October 10th of 2021. From Sweet Valley, Pennsylvania, Eva Fine will hopefully point out of the limit classes in 2022-23 while Kayla Fine will hope for another trip to Regionals in the alumni divisions (she qualified in alumni fences in 2021-22).
She transferred from the College of Charleston to Rutgers University in the middle of the 2021-22 season and rode at the intermediate level in the spring. But on September 24th Avery Swartz of Rutgers University (on left) thrived after having been bumped up to the open levels for the new season. Scarlet Knights head coach Kelly Francfort (on right) saw the sophomore from Bridgewater, New Jersey win her open fences to start the day while placing third in open flat one class later. Swartz would finish the day as high point rider while teammate Cora Gartelmann (not pictured) was reserve high point rider after winning a "Question-off" made up of four riders each with a first and a fourth.
