IHSA ZONE 2 - REGION 3

Photo
Last season Morrisville State College captured their fifth consecutive Western Region Title and once again Maggie Herbert was the leading open rider. From Jeffersonville, New York, Herbert prevailed in what was a larger region as the State University of New York at Oswego and the University of Guelph joined Syracuse, Colgate and the Mustangs in Region 3. Herbert (on right) is seen here at '24 IHSA Nationals with Morrisville western co-coach Julie Corey last May 4th. Herbert's final IHSA ribbon prior to graduating was a third in Individual Open Reining that day.

According to the Skidmore College Athletics web site Georgia Quakenbos of the Thoroughbreds (on right) qualified for Regionals in limit fences when she won the division on November 16th. A senior from Strafford, Vermont, Quakenbos was one of four Skidmore riders to win twice and compete in a ride-off for high point rider that day. Head Coach Belinda Colgan (on left) has seen the Thoroughbreds win four of their five fall shows (including an immaculate 49 on October 26th where even the drop score was a seven) while Quakenbos has won at least two straight limit flat classes.

At the November 2nd Morrisville State College show Skidmore riders won the first five classes held that day. Then there were two straight classes without a Skidmore rider. Then Charlotte Pope of Oneonta State College (on left, with head coach Deb Pernat) did what had not been done so far that day: She finished ahead of a Skidmore rider in the placings. A sophomore from Cooperstown, New York, Pope won the second section of limit fences. Over an hour later Pope also won her limit flat to qualify for the ride-off that day. Considering that Skidmore had a rider in 14 classes and that their riders in ten of those classes won blue ribbons it is no mean feat that Pope twice finished ahead of a Skidmore rider and eventually earned the reserve high point rider ribbon that day.

Sophia Meyer of the State University of New York at Albany (pictured) also won twice on November 2nd to join the ride-off. A sophomore from Buffalo, New York, Meyer was also a winner in both of her limit classes. Ultimately the three-way ride-off was won by Skidmore open rider Kenya Sanders, who according to the Skidmore athletics site holds a 54-50 lead over teammate Harper Sanford in the Region 3 hunter seat open rider standings after five shows.

From Fabius, New York, Sage Badman of the State University of New York at Cobleskill (on left) was a blue ribbon winner in the first limit over fences class at Morrisville on November 2nd. The Fighting Tigers freshman is seen here with head coach Ray Whelihan, who saw his team finish third that day with 33 points (one behind reserve high point team Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute). The Fighting Tigers would fair even better in two weeks, scoring 34 points while finishing second to host Skidmore on November 16th.

Colgate University has been reserve high point team at least once so far in 2024-25, having done so with 32 points at the November 9th Morrisville State show. A week earlier Jordan Alt (on left, a senior from Blue Bell, Pennsylvania) and head coach Jo Stephenson posed for this photo around the time Alt was one place ahead of Quakenbos to win the third of four sections of limit fences also at Morrisville on November 2nd.

Sarah Dingel of Siena College (pictured) was the first rider from a school other than Skidmore to win a class on November 2nd. A junior from Manlius, New York, Dingel won the second of two sections of intermediate fences. Dingel helped the Saints score 31 points for fourth place that day. The Saints were very consistant over a three-week span, scoring 31, then 30 and then 32 at the first Skidmore show on November 16th.

During the November 2nd Morrisville show Sophie Rose of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (pictured) told us she was very close to pointing out of intermediate flat. It is not known if the junior from Colchester, Connecticut pointed out a week later, but on November 9th the Engineers were high point team at Morrisville with 36 points. This makes RPI the only Region 3 hunter seat team other than Skidmore to take high point team honors so far in 2024-25.

Hamilton College brought eight riders to the November 2nd Morrisville State show and two of them are open riders. And one of the open riders is Anna Richardson (on right, with head coach Trisha McNamara). A senior from Granby, Massachusetts, Richardson earned three points over the open divisions that day. Though we don't have the team totals from the October 26th Siena show we can tell you that Hamilton's 17 points on November 2nd was their best total over the final four fall shows.

Morrisville State College hunter seat coach Erica Ferreira (on left, herself a former IHSA rider for Cazenovia College) and Molly Martin - Bauer of the Mustangs (on right) pose with "Julez" (whose name is pronounced "Jules" or "Jewels") during their home show on November 2nd. A senior from Fairport, New York, Martin - Bauer was fourth in her limit flat class that day. The Morrisville hunter seat team likely had their best day of the fall at Skidmore on November 23rd, scoring 42 points to earn reserve high point team honors only five points behind the hosts.

Skidmore College has scored 49, 47, 28, 43 and 47 points over five shows which adds up to 214 points and the lead in Region 3 headed into the winter break. Seen here at 2024 IHSA Nationals is Sadie Nesbitt of the Thoroughbreds, who has figured big in several of their wins thus far. A senior from Rochester, New York, Nesbitt was the third Skidmore rider of the day on November 2nd to win a class, prevailing in intermediate fences to point out of the division. Nesbitt won twice on November 23rd and eventually was second to teammate Charlotte Lyon in the ride-off for high point that day. While Region 3 will not show again until February 15th Skidmore will compete in the Holiday Tournament of Champions in Blacksburg, Virginia on December 7th. This event is an invitational, with nine of the 15 teams entered having won their region last season including the Thoroughbreds.
