IHSA ZONE 7 - REGION 3

Photo
She won the red ribbon and she didn't even have to lope! From Apple Valley, Minnesota, Emma Edwards of the University of Wisconsin at River Falls (on left) was the reserve champion in team beginner western horsemanship at 2019 IHSA Nationals in Syracuse, New York on May 4th of that year. Janie Huot, the head coach of the Falcons at the time, is on the right. Though the school is in Wisconsin, the town of River Falls is not that far east of the Minnesota border. Therefore many of their students cross state lines from the Twin Cities area to attend Wisconsin - River Falls.

While Huot coached the western team that weekend, Rachael Walker coached the University of Wisconsin at River Falls hunter seat team then and now. Walker (on right) is seen here at 2019 IHSA Nationals with Madeleine Olson of the Falcons. From Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, Olson holds the white ribbon she earned in individual intermediate on the flat at Nationals on May 2, 2019. This fourth was the best ribbon earned by a Region 3 hunter seat rider that weekend.

The University of Minnesota at Crookston won the 2018-19 Region 3 hunter seat Region Title, snapping North Dakota State's three-year run at the top. The Golden Eagles just missed out on sending a full hunter seat team to Nationals, as four teams were still alive for second place going into the final team class at Zone 7 Zones. Selena Young of the Golden Eagles (on right, with head coach Kayla Hanson) advanced through Zones individually. After placing second at Zones in individual open on the flat Young closed out her four years in Crookston with an eighth in the same division at IHSA Nationals in Syracuse on May 2, 2019.

From Rochester, Minnesota, Madison Long of North Dakota State University (on left) represented Region 3 at 2019 IHSA Nationals in the individual AQHA high point rider competition. Head coach Tara Swanson (on right) saw Long once again qualify to compete in the same division at 2020 Nationals but sadly all shows after March 8th of the current calendar year were cancelled due to the coronavirus. Had the season continued the Bison would have fielded a full western team at the El Reno, Oklahoma Semifinal. North Dakota State snapped Wisconsin - River Falls two-year run at the top of the Region 3 Western team standings.

From Middletown, New Jersey, Catalina Graziano of the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities) poses with her Mother after horse draw for the individual open over fences class which started the four-day 2019 IHSA Nationals event. Graziano was a reserve champion twice at Zone 7 Zones a few weeks earlier in order to qualify for Nationals. Graziano was second at Zones in both individual open over fences and the Cacchione class. Graziano earned the seventh-best combined judges' score (out of 24 riders entered) in the Cacchione Cup over fences phase at Nationals on May 3, 2019 with a '76.'

Janie Huot (on left) almost went out on top while Krista Schoenfelder (on right) went out on top for her sophomore year. Huot retired from coaching the University of Wisconsin at River Falls western team following the 2018-19 season, but not before the Falcons took home the Reserve National Champion western team award. From Rochester, Minnesota, Schoenfelder won the team advanced western horsemanship division on May 5, 2019. Schoenfelder was the only Falcon rider to win a class at 2019 Nationals, though Edwards and Libby Alders (not pictured, in team intermediate western horsemanship) won reserve champion ribbons. Defending Champion the University of Findlay repeated by a 49-41 score over the Falcons. Still Huot retired having just coached Wisconsin - River Falls to their best finish at an IHSA Nationals event in program history.
