IHSA ZONE 7 - REGION 3

Photo
After finishing third at the Lubbock, Texas Semifinal in March the University of Wisconsin at River Falls finished in a tie for sixth place in the Western Team Competition at 2022 IHSA Nationals in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The western team classes commenced on May 6th, with Raeann Kaz of the Falcons (on left) placing second in team open reining. A senior at the time (from Jim Falls, Wisconsin), Kaz earned the best ribbon of the weekend of any Region 3 rider with the reining red ribbon. A short time later Anna Theel (on right) was fourth in team level I western horsemanship. While Kaz rode only that one time at '22 Nationals Theel would ride in an individual class two days later. From Eyota, Minnesota, Theel would close out her sophomore year with a fifth in individual rookie western horsemanship on May 8th. Theel had won the individual rookie class at Semifinals to continue on to Harrisburg.

While Theel won individual rookie in Lubbock, Michaela Long of North Dakota State University won individual open reining at Semifinals that same March weekend. From Rochester, Minnesota, Long (on right) is seen here with Bison head coach Tara Swanson not far from the out-gate on the floor of the Equine Arena at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg prior to competing in the NRHA-sponsored individual open reining class at 2022 IHSA Nationals on May 7th. Long was fifth in the nation in the division to conclude her junior year in Fargo.

The University of Minnesota at Crookston has won four consecutive Region 3 hunter seat team titles, including the 2020-21 season when Region 3 was one of only four regions nationwide to hold IHSA shows. The only member of the Golden Eagles to compete at 2022 IHSA Nationals - English or Western - is Clara Lemarr (on right, with head coach Kayla Hanson). From Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, Lemarr was second in individual open over fences at Zone 7 Zones on April 10th (Zones were also held in Lubbock, Texas) to become one of only two Region 3 hunter seat riders to compete at 2022 IHSA Nationals.

University of Wisconsin at River Falls western head coach Bella Groover (on left) earned her first region title in 2021-22. Groover succeeded long-time western coach Janie Huot (not pictured), who guided the Falcons to Reserve National Championship honors in 2018-19 which was her final season before retiring. Another of Groover's riders with multiple rides at 2022 Nationals is Sydney Hill (on right), who is holding her fourth place ribbon from the first-ever IHSA Nationals Team Ranch Riding class held on May 7th. From Princeton, Minnesota, Hill also was seventh in team level II western and eighth in individual level I western during the final days of her sophomore year in River Falls.

Campus Equestrian had never posted a photo of a St. Cloud State University rider until now. We are grateful that Huskies head coach Samantha Cotter (not pictured) forwarded us this photo of Katie Erickson, who was eighth in individual intermediate on the flat for St. Cloud State at Zone 7 Zones on April 10th. Campus Equestrian is always looking to post photos of IHSA riders who have achieved goals such as qualifying for Regionals, earning high point or reserve high point rider ribbons at a show or leading their region in the open rider standings. If you would like to forward us a photo please e-mail it to us at editor@campusequestrian.com.
