IHSA ZONE 7 - REGION 5

Photo
Though she was a senior in 2017-18 she is not yet done showing as an undergraduate for Kansas State University. She is Halle Kutsche (pictured) and at 2018 IHSA Nationals she was in the ribbons twice. From the Woodlands, Texas, Kutsche was second in the individual open over fences class on May 3rd which started the four-day event (her initial combined Judge's score of '82' would have meant fourth place but further testing among the top four moved her up). Kutsche's score of '84' in the jumping phase of the Cacchione Cup competition was the second best score though eventually she earned seventh place. Kutsche retained IHSA eligibility for 2018-19 as she did not use up all eight semesters by the end of last season.

She won the 2011 individual AQHA High Point Open Rider award and seven seasons later she is on the coaching staff of her alma matter. She is Bekah Irish (on right), who rode for two seasons at Black Hawk College where she won the individual AQHA before completing two more years of school at the University of Findlay. Irish is seen here at 2018 Nationals with then-sophomore Kinsey Ayres of Black Hawk. From Powell Butte, Oregon, Ayres nearly brought Black Hawk to a Western Team Championship in 2016-17, as her second in team open horsemanship and third in team open reining accounted for nine of Black Hawk's 24 points. Ultimately Black Hawk was second to St. Andrews by a close 27-24 score in Lexington. Ayres finished eighth in the individual AQHA High Point Open Rider competition at 2018 Nationals.

Only two Region 5 hunter seat riders competed at 2018 IHSA Nationals in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Kutsche was one and the other is Aubrey Sieve of Saint Louis University (pictured). From Lisle, Illinois, Sieve was second in individual walk-trot-canter at 2018 Zone 7 Zones in Springfield, Missouri on April 8th to advance to IHSA Nationals in the division.

She was the first rider to win a class at the Galva, Illinois Semifinal last March. From Stillwell, Oklahoma, Rebecca Garrett of Northeastern Oklahoma A and M College (on left, with head coach Amanda Jones) won the individual novice western class on March 17th which was the first officially completed class of the two-day event. Ironically after being the first winner at the Semifinal Garrett would find individual novice western horsemanship to be the last class held at the four-day IHSA Nationals at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg (where this photo was taken). Garrett would complete her second season at NEO with a ninth in the division on May 6th.

By the middle of 2016 the number of Western riders in Zone 7, Region 5 became so great that there was a need to split the region. As a result half of the region became Zone 7, Region 4 while the other half kept the Zone 7, Region 5 name. To make matters slightly confusing there already was a Hunter Seat Zone 7, Region 4 and after the split only three schools from that region coincidentally show in the western Zone 7, Region 4. Therefore we place all of the Western Zone 7, Region 4 photos and schedule information on the Zone 7, Region 5 page. This explains how Dani Picard of Missouri State University (on right, with co-coach Sue Webb) is at 2018 IHSA Nationals to compete in the individual AQHA High Point Open Rider competition. If Picard is in this particular class as the rider from her region with the most combined open reining and open rail points then why is Ayres of Black Hawk there as well? Because Picard qualified in Region 5 while Ayres did so in Region 4. Missouri State and Northeastern Oklahoma A and M are joined by Washington University in St. Louis, Kansas State University, the University of Kansas and the University of Southern Illinois at Carbondale at Zone 7, Region 5 western shows.

The Western shows held under the Zone 7, Region 4 name contain Augustana College, Iowa State University and the University of Wisconsin at Platteville from the hunter seat Region 4 along with Illinois State University, Truman State University, Northern Illinois University, Western Illinois University and the aforementioned Black Hawk College. Both Regions 4 and 5 had riders at the same 2018 Semifinal (held on the Black Hawk campus) and one of the riders from the host school was second in her individual class. She is Mikayla Osborne of Black Hawk (center, between her parents underneath the stands at IHSA Nationals). From Canton, Illinois, Osborne followed up her second in individual beginner western horsemanship on March 17th with a third in the same division at Nationals in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on May 6th.
