IHSA ZONE 7 - REGION 5

Photo
There were ten classes held on day one of 2016 IHSA Nationals last May and Katie Young of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale competed in both the first and ninth classes that day. From Troy, Missouri, Young (on right) is seen here with Salukis' team president Taylor Dashiell who made the trip to Lexington to see Young compete. Young got to Nationals by placing first in individual open on the flat and second in individual open over fences at 2016 Zone 7 Zones in Canyon, Texas last April.

Riders from Region 5 earned the top two placings in individual open on the flat at '16 Zones as Hayley Banister of Kansas State (on right) was second to Young in the division. From Topeka, Kansas, Banister has been the Region 5 Cacchione Cup entry at IHSA Nationals each of her first two years in college. Both years also coincide with K-State's return to the IHSA after seven seasons as a varsity-only program. And head coach Ashley Duda (on left) has advanced a full Kansas State University team through to Nationals each of the past two seasons, likely helped by Banister's good ribbons in the open divisions.

Only four regions nationwide advanced both their top hunter seat team and their top western team through to IHSA Nationals during the 2015-16 season and Region 5 was one of them. Black Hawk College once again fielded a full western team at Nationals and head coach Donna Irvin (on right) saw her riders earn points in four of the six western team classes. Black Hawk open rider Alex Miller (on left) was as busy as anyone, as Miller competed in both open level team classes, both open level individual classes and the individual AQHA High Point Open Rider competition. From Warsaw, Indiana, Miller's best ribbons came in the team open reining class (a second) and the AQHA High Point Open Rider division (fourth).

Seen here with her Mother, Haley McWhorter of Black Hawk College was third at 2016 IHSA Nationals in team novice western horsemanship on May 6th. At that moment Black Hawk had nine points which put them only a point out of first. Eventually Black Hawk finished tied for third with the University of Findlay at 16 points each, yet only three points behind first place teams Berry College and St. Andrews University. From Manito, Illinois, McWhorter (on right) also placed fourth in individual intermediate western horsemanship on May 8th.

Seen here with her sister, Lindsey King of Illinois State University (on left) was fourth in individual advanced western horsemanship at the Galva, Illinois Semifinal (hosted by Black Hawk College) on March 20th, 2016. By placing inside the top four at a Semifinal event King advanced through to IHSA Nationals. From Peoria, Illinois, King finished her senior year by placing eighth in the same division at Nationals inside the AllTech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park on May 8th.

Saint Louis University head coach Jodi Gold (on right) has sent a rider to IHSA Nationals each of the past two seasons. In 2014-15 Mallika Jai (not pictured) made it through to Nationals in individual novice over fences while in 2016 Jennifer Kraemer (on left) qualified in individual walk-trot. From Wildwood, Missouri, Kraemer defeated eight others to win the individual walk-trot at Zone 7 Zones to move along to Lexington.
