IHSA ZONE 7 - REGION 5

Photo
Four riders were tested in the individual limit over fences division at IHSA Nationals on May 3rd and one of them was Andrea Battram of Saint Louis University (pictured). Seen here waiting for horse draw the junior coincidentally from St. Louis, Missouri finished third in the division. Battram was the first Zone 7, Region 5 rider to compete at 2024 IHSA Nationals and as it turned out also received the best ribbon of any Region 5 rider entered.

A junior from Wilmington, Illinois, Payton Koopman (on right) became the first Truman State rider to qualify for IHSA Nationals in a decade when she placed third in individual ranch riding at the Albion, Michigan Semifinal on March 23rd. Koopman and Bulldogs head coach Emily Costello posed for this photo prior to horse draw during the first day of IHSA Nationals at Tryon International on May 3rd.

In that individual ranch riding class in Albion, Michigan on March 23rd Kia Davis of Southern Illinois University was fourth just behind Koopman. A senior from Macomb, Illinois, Davis (on left) and head coach Casey Parr are seen here near the western arena stands prior to Davis closing out her final IHSA season with a seventh in the individual ranch class (which was the first western class of any kind held at 2024 IHSA Nationals) on May 3rd.

At 2024 IHSA Nationals we asked Sophie Karney of Missouri State University (on right, with head coach Natalie Mook) where she is from and what year she is in college. Karney said she is from Louisa, Virginia and she is a senior. However Karney added she will still be enrolled at Missouri State next season, and still has IHSA elibility remaining (which means she has not yet used up all eight semesters in which she is allowed to compete). On March 30th Karney was second in individual limit flat at Zone 7 Zones in Roscoe, Illinois to advance to Tryon to compete at Nationals in the same division.

Strange as it may sound Iowa State University shows English in Zone 7, Region 4 and Western in Zone 7, Region 5 while Black Hawk College officially shows Western in Zone 7, Region 4 and English in Zone 7, Region 5! This swap has to do with balancing out the IHSA Western numbers in this part of the country. The Cyclones captured the Zone 7, Region 5 western region title in 2023-24 and open rider Jessica Theobald (on right) was the region's top open western rider. As a result Theobald advanced directly to 2024 IHSA Nationals at Tryon International Equestrian Center in Mill Spring, North Carolina to compete against 20 others in the individual high point open western rider competition. A senior from Clear Lake, Iowa, Theobald is seen here with Iowa State head coach Kelly Blair prior to competing in the reining phase of the individual high point on May 5th.
