IHSA ZONE 8 - REGION 1

Photo
At 2022 IHSA Nationals the individual introductory equitation and team introductory equitation divisions were held back-to-back on May 6th. Stanford University had riders entered in both of these classes. Tara Jones (on left), at the time a senior from Carmel, California, rode in the individual class while Maxime de Belloy de Saint Leinard (on right, at the time a freshman from Marin County, California) rode in the team class. Known by his teammates simply as "Maxime (Max-em-may)" the freshman with the longest name this writer can remember ever appearing in an IHSA Nationals program placed third in team introductory to earn seven of Stanford's nine team points for the weekend (the scoring system is different at an IHSA Nationals event, with ten points awarded for first, eight for second, seven for third all the way down to a half point for tenth). Stanford has reached IHSA Nationals with a full hunter seat team every season since they tied for second at 2006 Nationals which like 2022 was also held in the Equine Arena at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Omitting 2020 and 2021 since no Nationals were held those years, Stanford has the current longest active streak of appearances with a full hunter seat team now standing at 15 consecutive IHSA Nationals events.

At 2022 Zone 8 Zones hosted by Stanford University last April 9th Lily Manshouri of Sonoma State University (on right) finished second to Jones of Stanford in the individual introductory class. Both thus advanced to Nationals, where this time Manshouri faired better. From Novato, California, Manshouri is seen here with head coach Maggie Clancy as both wait for horse draw in the rotunda of the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex on May 6th. Manshouri placed tenth in individual introductory equitation to close out her junior year.

The National Reining Horse Association and the American Quarter Horse Association co-sponsor the individual open reining class at IHSA Nationals. The top four riders at each of the three Semifinal events make up the field in this division. Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo's Christian Toy is seen here with "Brue" before mounting up to compete in the individual open reining at Nationals on May 7th. From Salem, Oregon, Toy finished her junior year by placing ninth in the division.

Since Zone 8, Region 2 did not hold western classes in 2021-22 and Zone 8, Region 4 did not hold enough western shows to be legal Taylor Stephens of the College of the Sequoias was the only rider from a West Coast school to compete in the Individual AQHA High Point Rider class at 2022 IHSA Nationals. From Ventura, California, Stephens (on left) is seen here with head coach Kim Pitigliano at the top of the stands in the equine arena at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg on May 7th.

Carly Johnson (on left) and University of California at Davis coach Kris Urlaub are all smiles prior to Johnson's ride in the individual beginner horsemanship division at 2022 IHSA Nationals on May 8th. And following that ride the two could not have been happier, for the then-junior from Tracy, California won the beginner class to bring Region 1 their only blue ribbon of the weekend. Johnson is the first UC-Davis rider in program history to win a Western Class at an IHSA Nationals event and the second following Emily Luck who won individual open on the flat at 1995 Nationals.
