IHSA ZONE 8 - REGION 1

She went fourth in the individual intermediate over fences division at IHSA Nationals in Lexington, Kentucky last May 5th and received a combined Judge's score of "84." Though Alexandra "Lexie" Smallwood of Santa Clara University (center, with head coach Nikki Abercrombie on left and "James" on right) had the top score after all 16 riders had jumped she still had to test versus three others. From San Diego, Smallwood remained the leader after the test and finished her junior year at Santa Clara by becoming the first rider in school history to win a class at an IHSA Nationals event.

Smallwood was not the only Zone 8, Region 1 rider to win a hunter seat individual class at 2016 Nationals. One day after Smallwood earned the blue it was Sarah Lindsay's turn. From Denver, Lindsay finished her senior year at Stanford University by placing first in individual walk-trot inside AllTech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park. Lindsay (pictured) is not the first Stanford rider to win an individual class at an IHSA Nationals event. In fact former Cardinal Karen Lone won the same walk-trot class at 2007 Nationals in West Springfield, Massachusetts.

From Visalia, California, Jamie Thompson of the College of the Sequoias (on left) was fourth in individual intermediate western horsemanship at the Galva, Illinois Semifinal last March 19th. Seen here with head coach Kim Petigliano at AllTech Arena in Lexington, Kentucky seven weeks later, Thompson finished her sophomore year with a seventh place ribbon in the same division at Nationals on May 8th. Though Stanford captured their third consecutive western region title in 2016 Petigliano can claim she coached College of the Sequoias to a Western Region Title just before Stanford started that streak, with the Giants earning Western high point team honors for the 2012-13 season.

2016 was not the first time Sarah Villasenor of Sonoma State University (center) competed at an IHSA Nationals event. From Glendale, California, Villasenor was tenth in individual walk-trot at 2014 IHSA Nationals in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Seen here between her trainer Carrie Hover (on left) and Sonoma State head coach Michelle "Shelly" Davis (a 2010 Sonoma graduate who founded their equestrian team) Villasenor completed her senior year by moving up a notch to ninth place in the individual walk-trot-canter at '16 Nationals in Lexington, Kentucky on May 5th.

Though over 30 riders compete in the division at IHSA Nationals, only Cacchione Cup Riders who place tenth or higher receive ribbons. Of the top ten Cacchione entries at 2016 IHSA Nationals the eventual top six were all seniors, showing at IHSA Nationals as undergraduates for the final time. The rider who placed seventh at '16 Nationals in the Cacchione Cup is Abby Bertelson of Stanford University (pictured). Only a sophomore at the time, Bertelson also showed in team and individual classes in Lexington over three days. A year earlier Bertelson was third in team open flat in her only ride at the Big E at '15 Nationals. Stanford University has not only qualified a full hunter seat team for IHSA Nationals every year since 2006 the Cardinal has won Zone 8 Zones outright each of those seasons. Stanford also will host 2017 Zone 8 Zones at their Red Barn this April. Based on recent history one cannot help but think Bertelson has a good shot to return to a future IHSA Nationals event in some capacity.
