IHSA ZONE 8 - REGION 1

The majority of Zone 8, Region 1 riders who competed at 2023 IHSA Nationals were seniors, including Justice Myers of the University of California at Berkeley (on left). From Columbia, South Carolina, Myers is the first rider in the history of the Golden Bears' IHSA program to qualify for IHSA Nationals (Cal Berkeley first competed in an IHSA show during the 2010-11 season). On the right is head coach Jackie Martin Castro, who trains the Golden Bears at Skyland Ranch Equestrian Center in Oakland, California. Myers rode in the both the Cacchione Cup competition and the individual open over fences, earning fifth place in the latter on May 4th in Lexington, Kentucky.

Last season Christian Toy of Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo (on right) competed at Nationals in the individual open reining division. This time around Toy represented Region 1 in the individual AQHA High Point Open Rider competition. The senior from Salem, Oregon is seen here on May 6th with Mustangs head coach Lou Moore Jacobsen near the draw table, which this year featured a table-sized merry-go-round where riders picked their horse off of the spinning device (but not while it was moving). Toy was the only Region 1 Western rider to qualify for 2023 Nationals.

A senior from San Diego, California, Cunningham won individual intermediate on the flat at Zone 8 Zones on April 8th to qualify for IHSA Nationals in the division.

Did you know that Stanford University coach Tina Davey (on left) was previously a co-captain of the University of California at Santa Cruz equestrian team? Well now you do! Davey is part of the large coaching staff at Stanford, with Vanessa Bartsch (not pictured) the official head coach. Three members of the Cardinal placed fifth at 2023 IHSA Nationals (two individual, one team), with Audrey Washington the first to do so. The senior from Berkeley, California poses with Davey after going twelefth out of sixteen riders in the individual limit over fences in Lexington, Kentucky on May 4th.
