IHSA ZONE 8 - REGION 1

Photo
Seven of the eight individual hunter seat classes held at 2019 IHSA Nationals took place on May 2nd. However Maddison Marnin of Sonoma State University (center, with her parents) placed third in the only individual hunter seat class held on May 3rd. From San Diego, California, Marnin received the yellow ribbon in individual walk-trot in Syracuse, New York to conclude her sophomore year.

It took 21 years but Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo finally made it back to IHSA Nationals with a full Western team. Not since 1998 had a SLO rider competed in a team class at IHSA Nationals until Teresa Job (on right) competed in team open reining at the new Exposition Center on the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, New York on May 3rd. From Sonoma, California, Job is seen here with head coach Lou Moore Jacobsen before placing seventh in team open reining on May 3rd. Cal Poly had finished third at the Ocala, Florida Semifinal in March (one point ahead of Black Hawk College) to break the 21-year drought and qualify a full western team through to the National show.

Riders from Region 1 had a field day at Zone 8 Zones in Stanford, California on April 6th. Not only did host Stanford win the team competition by ten points the region's individual riders earned eight of the 16 top-two ribbons awarded to advance through to IHSA Nationals. One of five Region 1 individual riders to earn a red ribbon on April 6th was Lily Pier of the University of California at Santa Cruz. Seen here between former UCSC rider Maureen Michalson (on left) and coach Cassie Belmont (on right), Pier concluded her junior year by placing seventh in individual novice flat at 2019 IHSA Nationals in Syracuse, New York on May 2nd. It should be noted that seven of the eight riders from Region 1 to show in the individual hunter seat classes earned top ten ribbons at the year-end competiton.

If at first you don't succeed, try again. Jordan Miles of Reedley College (on left, with head coach Desi Molyneux) qualified to compete in the individual AQHA High Point Rider competition at 2018 IHSA Nationals in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Miles finished outside the top ten but again in 2019 she led the region in combined open rail and open reining points and made the trip east to Syracuse, New York to try and break into the top ten. From Raymond, California, Miles concluded her junior year by placing eighth overall in the multi-phased individual AQHA division at Nationals in Syracuse on May 5th. Cal Poly won the region for western in 2019 while Reedley won it in '18. Will one of the two win it in '20 or will College of the Sequoias or another school sneek past the pair this spring?

Stanford University's hunter seat team has a bit of a streak going. The Cardinal have won the Region 1 Region Title 14 years in a row and have won the Zone 8 Zones team competition each of those seasons. No school in the entire country has an active streak of Zones wins as long as the one currently held by Stanford. The Cardinal scored 36 and a half points at 2019 IHSA Nationals, including six points for Ali Black (on right) who placed fourth in team walk-trot-canter (the scoring system is different at IHSA Nationals, where first equals ten points, second eight points, third seven points, etc). Cardinal head coach Vanessa Bartsch (on left) saw Stanford finish third overall. Fast-forward to 2019-20 and the Cardinal are once again ahead in the Zone 8, Region 1 hunter seat team race, up by 15 points on Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo through three shows. From Seattle, Washington, Black is qualified for Regionals but in a western division rather than hunter seat. Black has pointed out of Level I western horsemanship but sits within seven points of going to Regionals in what is now known as novice equitation.
