IHSA ZONE 8 - REGION 1

Photo
From Greenfield, Massachusetts, McKenna Goodson (pictured) was the only Stanford University rider to win an individual class at Zone 8 Zones on March 29th. The Cardinal senior won the individual limit flat to advance to 2026 IHSA Nationals in the division. Stanford won plenty of blue ribbons in the Zones team competition, coming out on top in five of the eight divisions. The Cardinal won 48-39 over Colorado State University on the 20th anniversary of when their long streak of Zone Championships started. Stanford has sent a full hunter seat team to IHSA Nationals every season since 2006, the current longest active streak of such appearances be it English or Western.

The first Region 1 hunter seat rider to compete at 2026 IHSA Nationals was Jess Kammeyer of the University of California at Berkeley (on left). Seen here with head coach Dana Robinson, Kammeyer was second at Zones in individual limit over fences to reach Nationals in Mill Spring, North Carolina on May 1st. From Half Moon Bay, California, Kammeyer closed out her senior year with a seventh in the same division in the third English class held at '26 Nationals.

Competing in the Western arena in the opposite side of the Tryon International Equestrian Center indoor was Madelyn Nevels of College of the Sequoias (on right). Seen here with head coach Kim Pitigliano, Nevels was entered in the individual open western horsemanship division on May 1st probably around the time Kammeyer was riding hunter seat not far away. A freshman from Exeter, California, Nevels was second in individual open horsemanship at the Las Cruces, New Mexico Semifinal on March 21st to advance to Nationals in the division. While Nevels was outside the top ten in open horsemanship at Tryon her season was not over, for Nevels was also entered in the individual High Point Open Rider division as the Zone 8, Region 1 representative. Nevels had been fourth at Semifinals in the division and at Nationals on May 3rd Nevels was again fourth against the best of the best. Therefore Nevels can claim to be the fourth-best IHSA Western Rider nationwide for the 2025-26 season.

Three Region 1 schools advanced hunter seat riders through Zones to 2026 Nationals and Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo is the third. Allison White (on left), who is seen here with head coach Lou Moore Jacobson, showed in the individual novice equitation division for the Mustangs. The senior from Orange, California was second in the individual novice at Zones to reach the year-end show in North Carolina.

While roughly half the riders Stanford University took to 2026 IHSA Nationals were taking part in the Championship show for the first time, Rafi Wolf of the Cardinal was in Mill Spring, North Carolina for the third time in three seasons. The junior from Seattle, Washington is seen here in the stands on May 1st prior to placing ninth in the individual open flat. Wolf would earn six of Stanfords' twelve team points with a fourth in team open on the flat on May 3rd which was also the final hunter seat class of the three day show.
