IHSA ZONE 6 - REGION 2

Photo
Otterbein University placed sixth in the hunter seat team competition at 2024 IHSA Nationals, scoring 24 and a half points including at least a half point in seven of the eight team classes. Coaches Kari Briggs (on left) and Lindsay Yinger (on right) pose with Emma Herbruck of the Cardinals after her ride in team intermediate on the flat on May 5th. A junior from Cleveland, Ohio, Herbruck was one of three Otterbein riders to place fifth in a team class over the three-day weekend.

Ohio State University placed seventh in the western team competition at 2024 IHSA Nationals, scoring 22 and a half points. Isaiah Baughman (center, between coaches Miranda Roesel and Abbie Noble) was one of five Buckeyes to earn team points. A junior from Sidney, Ohio, Baughman was one of two Ohio State riders to place second in a team class, doing so in team ranch riding on May 4th. Ohio State kept their historic streak intact, now having advanced a full western team to IHSA Nationals every season since 1987.

A carousel might be child's play but being the best hunter seat rider in Zone 6, Region 2 is Childs play too! Lauren Childs of Kenyon College is seen here prior to horse draw for the Cacchione Cup Competition at IHSA Nationals in Mill Spring, North Carolina on May 4th. A senior from Cleveland, Ohio, Childs led the Region 2 hunter seat open rider standings in 2023-24 and after placing third in the Cacchione class at Zones found herself picking one of 24 horses off of the horse draw carousel inside the Tryon International equestrian center indoor. We are not sure which horse she drew but in the jumping phase a short time later Childs received a score of '71' from judges Andrea Wells (a former IHSA head coach) and Archie Cox (a former IHSA rider with Drew University who won individual open on the flat at 1989 Nationals).

Wilmington College finished second to Ohio State in the Region 2 Western Team Standings and advanced one rider through to 2024 IHSA Nationals. Maegan Pearson (on left, with head coach Stephanie McConnell) was second in individual level 2 western horsemanship at Semifinals in Murfreesboro, Tennessee on March 23rd to reach Nationals where she placed ninth in the division on May 5th. From Laurel, Indiana Pearson was one of a small number of freshmen to qualify individually for '24 Nationals. Pearson even earned one point in the Region 2 western open rider standings at the end of the regular season.

At 2023 IHSA Nationals we thought Elizabeth "Lizzie" Orosz of Otterbein University (pictured) was a senior and that the show in Lexington, Kentucky was her final appearance for the Cardinals. But we were wrong! Orosz had another year to compete and eventually the senior from Columbus, Ohio rode in three classes at 2024 IHSA Nationals. Orosz (whose last name rhymes with "Chorus" as she tells it) had two of those rides on May 5th, placing tenth in team open over fences and ninth in team open flat to close out her time with the Cardinals.

The last time we updated this page we mentioned that Erin Murray of Ohio State University (pictured) was busy at 2023 IHSA Nationals in Lexington, Kentucky. But when you are the go-to open rider on a team that has been to Nationals every year for over 30 years you will probably be busy at the year-end event until the school gives you a diploma! A senior from Dublin, Ohio, Murray was sixth in individual open western horsemanship on May 3rd, fifth in team open western horsemanship on May 5th and third in the individual High Point Western Open Rider competition also on May 5th. By placing third in the latter Murray can claim to be the third-best western open rider in the country for the 2023-24 IHSA season.
