IHSA ZONE 6 - REGION 2

Photo
Through the first two Region 2 shows of 2024-25 Otterbein University had four riders qualified for Regionals including both Rachael Wingard (on left) and Emma Herbruck (on right). Wingard (a junior from Powell, Ohio) and Herbruck both pointed out of limit fences over the November 2nd/3rd weekend. Then on December 7th Herbruck (a senior from Chagrin Falls, Ohio) won her intermediate flat class at the Holiday Tournament of Champions invitational to help the Cardinals score 28 points to take fourth place in a field of 16 teams.

University of Dayton head coach Maddie Davis (on left) rode for not one but two IHSA teams as an undergraduate, riding first for Randolph College and later (after Randolph eliminated their riding program) for Ohio University. Davis saw one of her Flyers point out over the November 2nd/3rd weekend in Chloe Culp (on right). A sophomore from Ada, Michigan, Culp is qualified in the ever-popular limit fences. Dayton scored 23 points on November 16th to tie Ohio State for reserve high point team that day. Having entered the contest two points ahead of the Buckeyes the Flyers retained third place in standings for at least one more day.

A freshman from Rome, Ohio, Abby Eland of Wilmington College is seen here between her parents in the lobby of the Austin E. Knowlton Center for Equine Science on November 16th (which is the proper name for Otterbein's facility). One of five Wilmington riders entered that day, Eland is seen here after placing second in the next-to-last class of the day, the second section of pre-novice equitation. This turned out to be the best ribbon of the day for the Quakers.

Though Otterbein University recently rode in the Holiday Tournament hosted by Virginia Tech on December 7th this photo is from a similar December 2022 Holiday Tournament also at Virginia Tech. Maddy Gaber of the Cardinals (on left) is seen here with head coach Kari Briggs after placing fourth in novice equitation that day. The junior from St. Charles, Illinois told a funny story on November 16th at their home show this season. At a previous show Gaber had one of the walkie-talkies and was trying to help get the show started. Gaber asked over the walkie-talkie if they were ready for the National Anthem, since it was almost time for it to be performed. Within seconds someone walked over to Gaber and handed her the microphone to sing! Needless to say Gaber did not sing the anthem that morning. On November 16th of this season Gaber was second in the fifteenth and final class of the day, the fourth section of limit flat.

The November 16th/17th weekend was the final one for Ohio University's Emma Boczulak as she graduates in December. The senior from Brecksville, Ohio is seen here as a freshman (with "Indigo") after placing second in novice equitation at Otterbein on November 14, 2021. A week prior to the November 16th/17th contests Boczulak was involved in running a pickle-eating contest at Ohio U. Apparently it was a big success, as Boczulak said they ran out of pickles in 30 minutes! If her final ride was on the 16th then it was a good one, as Boczulak won her limit flat. After each class in which a Bobcat wins the Ohio University riders on the ground level chant "Oh You" and the Bobcats in the stands reply "Oh Yeah!" This cheer was heard eleven times that day.

Kenyon College scored 21 points on Novmeber 16th with Christa Cheney earning seven of them. The senior from Los Angeles, California is seen here in front of the team banner after winning the lone section of introductory equitation that day. Classes on the 16th had at least six riders and when at their largest were made up of twelve. Cheney's class was made up of seven riders.

Denison University coach Makalyn Williams (on right) was a member of Emory & Henry College's 2019 and 2022 IHSA National Champion hunter seat teams. Williams is seen here in front of the Denison team banner with Maile Tur of the Big Red, who qualified for Regionals in limit flat over the November 2nd/3rd weekend.

A freshman from Galina, Ohio, Emma Linton of Otterbein University (pictured) was the first Cardinal on the scoreboard at both the November 16th Otterbein show and the Tournament of Champions on December 7th. Linton was third in open fences on the 16th and second in open fences on the 7th. Linton is one of two standout Cardinal freshmen open riders along with Abigail Roberts, both of whom finished the 16th tied for second in the Region 2 open rider standings with 23 points each. And it should be mentioned that Linton was a winner in open fences at the Pre-Season Tournament of Champions invitational which Otterbein hosted and won 42-40 over Savannah College of Art & Design on September 21st. This was the first time in three years that anyone was able to defeat SCAD in a Tournament series show.

The entire region co-hosted the first two Region 2 shows of 2024-25 at Ohio State University's home base, Elite Stables in Hilliard, Ohio (the former Sid Griffith Performance Horses). On November 2nd Maeve Cassidy of the Buckeyes (pictured) was high point rider. The junior from Novelty, Ohio is seen here before placing third in limit flat on November 16th.
Photo
Ohio State University riders captured the first two high point rider awards of the season as Colleen Pettengill (pictured) claimed the honor on November 3rd. The sophomore from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan was second in open flat and fourth in intermediate fences (in a class made up of twelve riders) when this photo was taken on November 16th.
Photo
The third Region 2 rider of the year to claim high point rider honors was Ella Karagosian of Ohio University (on right). On November 16th the senior from Albany, Ohio won both of her open classes to take a 30-23 lead over Linton and Roberts in the open rider standings. Karagosian won a 'question-off' for high point rider with teammate Leah Heasley (not pictured) who had won both of her limit classes. Bobcats coach Michael Hiehle (on left) saw Ohio U win for the first time this season and for the first time in over a decade at an Otterbein home show. Apparently Otterbein had gone 13 years without losing an IHSA show at their center for equine studies prior to the Bobcats' 40-22 win (Dayton and Ohio State also had not outscored the Cardinals in Westerville in that span prior to the 16th).
