Consistency was the order of the day for Otterbein University on May 3rd, as the Cardinals claimed third place ribbons in three team classes and one individual class on the first day of 2018 IHSA Nationals in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The final rider of the day to accomplish this was Roman Mezger (on right, with team president Haleigh Depalma). Seen here in the holding area prior to mounting up, Mezger (whose name is often mispronounced with a "T" in it) earned his yellow ribbon in team intermediate on the flat. From Denver, Colorado, Mezger's ride gave Otterbein 12 points at the end of day one, putting the Cardinals in second at the time three points behind eventual champion Skidmore College. Otterbein went on to place fifth in the nation with 16 points.

The Ohio State University western team finished even higher, earning reserve national champion status with 19 points. Seen here with her Mother is Tori Gonzales of the Buckeyes (on right), who won the team beginner western class late in the day on May 5th. Including individual classes, Ohio State undergraduate riders won twice over the course of four days. Coincidentally both blue ribbons went to western riders who little-to-no riding experience prior to going to college. Tricia Bellman (not pictured) won the individual beginner western horsemanship class the day after Gonzales had prevailed in the similar team class.
We admit that this photo of Miami University of Ohio's Lauren Martyn dates from 2017 Nationals. Martyn is seen here in the trophy room of the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington after having placed seventh in individual open western horsemanship. Though she is one of many to have graduated a few days after competing in 2018 IHSA Nationals Martyn had quite a run while competing for the Red Hawks. Martyn made it to IHSA Nationals three of her four years and in the individual open western class each time. She was ninth in the division as a freshman in West Springfield and closed out her four years with an eighth in Harrisburg on May 4th.
The Ohio State University welcomed Tyler Kirby to their roster in 2017-18 and the then-freshman came up with big rides many times for the Buckeyes. From Grove City, Ohio, Kirby won his only two rides at the Reedsville, West Virginia Semifinal on March 26th. Kirby's win in individual open reining that day sent him on to IHSA Nationals in the division while his win in team open reining helped the Buckeyes earn second place. Seen here at Nationals with co-coach Ollie Griffith, Kirby placed second in the NRHA-sponsored individual open reining on May 5th and fifth in the individual AQHA High Point Western Rider competition on May 6th.
Before she got to Ohio University Ally Lagiovane (pictured) knew a thing or two about the IHSA. From Fredericksburg, Virginia, Lagiovane has trained with University of Mary Washington head coach Teresa Seay since the age of eight. Though we did not receive any points updates from Region 2 during the 2017-18 season we can tell you that Lagiovane qualified for Regionals in both intermediate flat and fences. Lagiovane closed out four years at the Athens, Ohio school with a fourth in individual intermediate over fences at Zone 6 Zones in Westerville, Ohio on April 7th.
She ended her freshman year with a first at 2017 IHSA Nationals, taking home the blue ribbon in individual walk-trot-canter. At that time Victoria Jenkins (on left) competed for Miami University of Ohio. She then transfered to Ohio State and on January 20th Jenkins won her novice flat class at the first of two Tournament of Champions invitational shows. From Springfield, Ohio, Jenkins is seen here at Stonegate Farm in Coolville, Ohio with Buckeyes hunter seat coach Allison Applegett (on right) after winning the novice flat. Ohio State had two teams entered in that tournament, and Jenkin's win helped Team "B" finish sixth with 24 points while the other Ohio State team ("A") was eighth with 23 points due to a tiebreaker.
From Dublin, Ohio, Otterbein University's Danielle Duryea is one of only three hunter seat open riders who can claim to have shown in both team open classes, both individual open classes and the Cacchione Cup Competition at 2018 IHSA Nationals at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex last May. Seen here between hunter seat coaches Lindsay Yinger (on left) and Carrie Briggs, Duryea earned two firsts, two seconds and a third during Zones on April 7th (which took place at Otterbeins' facility). Duryea went on to place in three of her IHSA Nationals rides, earning an eighth in team open over fences, a fifth in team open on the flat (the Cardinals' final two points of the show) and a third in individual open on the flat. Otterbein captured their second-consecutive hunter seat Region Title in 2017-18, marking the first time the Cardinals had sent a full hunter seat team to Zones on consecutive years since the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons.
