IHSA ZONE 5 - REGION 4

There were no IHSA Zones, Semifinals or Nationals shows held in 2020 or 2021 due to the pandemic. When Zones returned in 2022 not one rider from Zone 5, Region 4 made the top two in an individual class. The top Region 4 team did not make the top two either, and the Cacchione competitor was not in the top three. The same thing happened in 2023. But in 2024 the wait was finally over. Caroline Bardwell (on right), a Louisiana State University senior from Baton Rouge, Louisiana finished second in individual intermediate over fences at Zone 5 Zones in Hardeeville, South Carolina on April 6th to become the first Region 4 rider this decade to advance through Zones and compete at an IHSA Nationals event. And when the same class was held at IHSA Nationals at Tryon International Equestrian Center in Mill Spring, North Carolina on May 3rd Bardwell did even better. She closed out her final IHSA season with a first place ribbon in the individual intermediate over fences. Bardwell is also the first-ever LSU rider to win an individual class at an IHSA Nationals event.

At Zones on April 6th Bardwell would not be the only Region 4 rider to qualify for IHSA Nationals May 3rd through 5th. The top three riders in the Cacchione competition at IHSA Zones advance to Nationals, and Allison Smith of Texas State University at San Marcos did just that.
