Texas State University (at San Marcos) had two riders entered at 2022 Zone 5 Zones in Hardeeville, South Carolina. Sheridan Coppo (on left) was eighth in individual intermediate on the flat while Kayla Welch (on right) was ninth in individual novice equitation. Besides being head coach, Katherine Deichmann (center) is the 2015 IHSA National Champion in the alumni fences. Kansas State University graduate Deichmann earned the blue ribbon over the alumni jumps the last time Nationals were held in West Springfield, Massachusetts (photo courtesy of Katherine Deichmann/Texas State Equestrian Team).

Mississippi State University had a great ratio of coaches-to-riders at 2023 IHSA Nationals. Three Bulldogs qualified (with one qualifying twice) with two of the riders showing western and the other hunter seat. The first Mississippi State rider to compete was Kate Rushton, the lone hunter seater who competed in individual intermediate over fences on May 4th. From left to right are hunter seat coach Hannah Valigura, Rushton, hunter seat coach Justin Crowley (the Bulldogs have two of them) and Head Coach Ashley Glenn, who is also the Western Coach.

ZONING IN!

Co-judged by the 1985 and 1987 Cacchione Cup winner (then riding as Heidi Bossow) 2015 Zone 5 Zones featured only four regions, which was the only time that decade that fewer than five schools took part in the annual Zone 5 Zones team competition. Host Savannah College of Art & Design won the show by 16 points (and the Bees would go on to win their first IHSA National Championship in West Springfield, Massachusetts a month later)...

ARCHIVES AND RELICS

Region 1: Between 2003 and 2011 former Middle Tennessee State University riders won a total of Seven Blue Ribbons in the two Western Alumni Classes at IHSA Nationals. The seventh and final blue in that era was one of three wins in Alumni Reining over a five year span...

Region 2: Our story on 2016 IHSA Nationals was intentionally written as if the show had been held ages ago when in fact the show was only weeks old. But when posted again in 2023 the 'past tense' element makes sense, though the schools who won are still annual region-winners. A Region 2 school, who won the IHSA Western National Championship a year earlier, repeated (this time as co-champions) for their third such title since 2011...

Region 3: One of the three Semifinals held in March of 2015 took place at the St. Andrews University Equestrian Center in Laurinburg, North Carolina. The hosts won 33-28 over a Zone 5, Region 3 school which qualified a full western team for IHSA Nationals for the first time in program history...

Region 4: The IHSA created a new Zone 5, Region 4 in mid-2015 containing schools in Louisiana and Eastern Texas. A school from the Pelican State finished second in their first appearance since leaving Zone 7 and thus sent a full hunter seat team to IHSA Nationals for the fourth time...

Region 5: Only two schools have ever been awarded IHSA Hunter Seat National Champion Team honors three seasons in a row. Southern Seminary Junior College accomplished this in the 1980's and a Region 5 school did so as well 2015-17. Here is our brief account of this school (noted for being the only Region 5 school not located in the state of Florida) winning the third of those three titles...
