He was the last one of 16 riders to show up at the draw table. But when it was time to compete in the large arena at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex last May 4th Alessandro Lorenzoni of Wesleyan University was the National Champion in the individual walk-trot division. From left to right are then-co-captains Emily Hilton and Sarah Jacobs, Lorenzoni and Wesleyan head coach Louisa Fedora after Lorenzoni finished his sophomore year with a blue ribbon in the division.

The man in the middle holding the rather large check is one of the great horse show fathers of the 21st century. John Kowalchik saw daughter Molly (on horse) just miss out on the Cacchione Cup, as the then-senior on the Mount Holyoke College team was reserve national champion in the Cacchione last May 5th. Molly's older sister Emily (second on left) rode for Cornell University 2009-13 and later won both hunter seat alumni classes at IHSA Nationals (alumni over fences in 2016 and alumni flat in 2017). Mr. Kowalchik even provided this site with the results from Zone 1 Zones in April of 2017. With Molly graduating a great run for another IHSA parent that rarely missed one of his daughter's shows seems to have ended, though we can hope Molly might ride alumni at some point like Emily did.

2017 Zone 1 Zones marked the first time the University of Rhode Island qualified a full team through to IHSA Nationals. The Rams won a close race for second as the class-by-class results played out...
