From left to right are Kendra Merrigan, Megan Mularski and Kelly Shepstone of Centenary. Each placed in the top three and moved on to Zones in the individual walk-trot-canter. It would not be the only time during Region 1 Hunter Seat Regionals that the cyclones would sweep the top three.

RECIPIE FOR REGION 1 HUNTER SEAT REGIONALS: THREE QUARTERS CENTENARY, ONE QUARTER ALL OTHERS

Long Valley, NJ - What do Kristine Kennedy, Gina Pacopac, Sarah Kaufman, Caitlin Miner-LeGrand, Evan Wolf and Sara Altans all have in common?

Times Up. None of them ride for Centenary College, and all six will be riding at Zone 2 Zones on Friday, April 9th at Cazenovia College. Now what do Kristen Schwieger, Allison Guerin, Ethan Smock, Cem Uzman, Megan Mularski, Tamara Medinger, Amy Gregonis and Annabel Benito all have in common?.

Times Up. Not only do all eight ride for Centenary College, all eight placed first in their individual classes at Zone 2, Region 1 Hunter Seat Regionals on April 4th. Centenary swept all eight individual english classes. And aside from these eight firsts, the cyclones advanced ten other rides to Zones, capturing 75 percent of the Region's 24 possible rides this coming Friday.

We at Campus Equestrian are not sure it is the first time that anyone swept all eight classes at Zone 2, Region 1 Regionals, but even if it isn't, it is still the most dominating performance at a Regional show nationwide so far this season to our knowledge. Centenary will have 14 individual riders (Gregonis, Guerin, Smock and Schwieger all advanced in multiple divisions) and a full team at Zones. To look at Centenary's dominance another way, Zone 2 is one of four Zones nationwide which still advances the top three in each division to their Zones show. Had only the top two been permitted to advance, only Pacopac, Minor-LeGrand and Altans would be advancing with 13 cyclones.

More Centenary: The cyclones swept the top three placings in advanced walk-trot-canter (Mularski first, Kelly Shepstone second and Kendra Merrigan third), novice flat (Medinger, Smock and Katherine Mahland in that order) and open flat (Benito, Schwieger and Guerin finished 1-2-3 in a class with no other cyclone riders). In walk-trot, 13 riders were qualified, but only one from Centenary. Uzman still beat the field in the only class where two riders from other schools advanced (in this case, New York University's Miner-LaGrand and United States Military Academy's Wolf placed second and third, respectively). In the advanced walk-trot-canter, six of seven Centenary riders made the callback, and each received a placing from first through sixth.

Even More Centenary: Centenary had 35 rides. 18 resulted in another ride at Zones. Only two cyclone riders had more than one ride and did not advance in either division.

Let's Talk Alumni: While Centenary dominated the undergraduate classes, the alummi, which is currently free of any cyclones, held only a small amount of drama as only one of the two classes had more than three entries. Four-time IHSA National Champion Sandra Sayre was second in alumni fences, then first in alumni flat. Pace graduate Jennifer Leveille was third in both alumni divisions, while New York University graduate and head coach Dominique Vonsiatsky won the fences but was the odd-woman out with a fourth in alumni flat. Tara Gerber, the only rider to attend Regionals not to have ridden in Zone 2, Region 1 as an undergrad, was second in alumni flat, the only ride of the day for the Sacred Heart graduate. Gerber was crossing her fingers that former Sacred Heart teammate Kristine Brackenridge would also advance at Zone 3, Region 1 Regionals which were going on at the same time. So far they are both still alive, as Brackenridge won her alumni class in Newtown, Connecticut a few hours before Gerber earned a reserve ribbon. Will they meet at Nationals in Alumni Flat? The Zone 2 field will be smaller, as only one rider from Regions 2 and 3 made it to Zones in Alumni Flat, and only one other made it in Alumni Fences, making the jumping division a 33% chance.

The final word on Centenary: The cyclones will take both a hunter seat team and a stock seat team to Zones. The english team will ride on Friday while the western team will compete in a Zone 2 Zones team competition for the first time on Saturday.
