They earned six blue ribbons between them! Dartmouth freshman Kelly Tropin (on left) won her open fences, her open flat and the open flat championship class. Dartmouth senior Samantha Parsons (on right) won her open fences, her open flat and the open over fences championship class. And to top it all off Dartmouth College was high point team with 45 points.

DARTMOUTH WINS ALL-IVY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP HORSE SHOW BY SEVEN OVER CORNELL

Etna, NH - Known simply as Morton Farm the last time the all-Ivys or Ivy League Invitational was held in Etna, New Hampshire three seasons ago, the facility is now known as the Dartmouth Riding Center at Morton Farm. Regardless of the name change, and that today's show was indoors rather than outside in '07 the result was still the same: The hosts prevailed as high point team.

While there may have been an all-Ivy show at some point prior to the 1990's the current format went into effect when Dartmouth hosted what is considered the first such show in the Spring of 1997. The Big Green won that contest at Morton Farm and then had to wait ten years to win it again. Today's victory was the Big Green's third all-Ivy Championship, each of which took place at their host facility.

Dartmouth was frequently into the blue ribbons, winning ten of 21 undergraduate classes and two "Championship" classes. Samantha Parsons, a senior from Weston, Connecticut ended her IHSA undergraduate era with wins in both traditional open classes and the open fences championship class. Kelly Tropin, a freshman from New Canaan, Connecticut won both of her traditional open classes and the open flat championship. A third Dartmouth open rider, Faye Keegan, won both of her traditional open classes as the Big Green did not lose any class with the word 'open' in the title all day.

Yale University's Kaitlin McLean (on right) gives Coach Erin Klemyk a hug after winning her intermediate over fences class. McLean would also win the intermediate fences championship class.

Sarah Spangenberg, a sophomore from Atlanta, Georgia won both of her novice classes for the Big Green. Rochele Brown won her advanced walk-trot-canter class while Natalie Colaneri won the lone section of beginner walk-trot-canter. Dartmouth's score of 45 may be their all-time high (or a tie for it) at an all-Ivy show.

Cornell University, which won last season's all-Ivy show earned reserve high point honors with 38 points. Anne Elise Creamer, a freshman from Winter Park, Florida won her novice fences and the novice fences championship division. Katie Fink, a sophomore from Baltimore, Maryland won her intermediate flat and the intermediate flat championship division. Emily Kowalchik, a freshman from Loveland, Ohio won her novice flat and the novice flat championship. Other winners for the Big Red were Emily Webster (in intermediate flat), Melissa Kenny (in novice flat), Joelle Jach (in advanced walk-trot-canter) and JoAn Kim, who won the only section of walk-trot. Cornell finished with eight blue ribbons (seven in flat classes) and a sweep of the intermediate flat division.

Brown University finished third for the second season in a row. The Zone 1, Region 1 Region Champion scored 30 points (a three-point improvement over last season) while winning three classes. Rebecca McGoldrick, a sophomore who qualified for IHSA Nationals in individual novice flat was a blue ribbon winner in intermediate fences. Colleen Brogan, a senior from Haddonfield, New Jersey who had not ridden above the novice level prior to today's show, was also a blue ribbon winner in intermediate fences. Much later on Marissa Fuerst was second in advanced walk-trot-canter. However this qualified the sophomore from Atlanta, Georgia for the walk-trot-canter championship class, which Fuerst proceeded to win. Fuerst was also one of seven Brown riders to win a red ribbon. Several Bears were double-red winners, including Cacchione Cup qualifier Elizabeth Gilberti via a second in open flat and the championship division of the same.

When the team ribbons were handed out at the end of the day the white ribbon was given to Columbia University, as it was believed they had tied Yale University for fourth with 16 points each (and since they did not have a rider entered below novice, Yale had left for the day). However those keeping track of the points had forgotten to add Catherine Alden-Pelker's fourth in novice flat to the Yale total (Alden-Pelker had not received any fences points, which may have been where the oversight started). In any event the Bulldogs actually finished the day with 19 points. Kaitlin McLean, a freshman from Madison, Wisconsin won both her intermediate fences and the championship intermediate fences division for the Bulldog's only blue ribbons of the day. Ironically of the five Yale riders who took part in today's contest only McLean was not a senior! Yale open riders Joker Arroyo, Charlotte Morse and Jennie Nevin along with Alden-Pelker were all on their last undergraduate hurrah, with Nevin earning a second in open fences. Yale, which will be in an all-Connecticut region starting in the fall of 2010, will look and feel very different without their high profile class of '10 riders next season.

Columbia, without a walk-trotter or an open fences rider, was next with 16 points. Sophomore Julia Caine earned the Lion's first red ribbon with a second in novice flat, a feat that Mary Ross duplicated three novice flat classes later. The real Columbia highlights were the rides of alumni rider Jessica Nichols. Both alumni classes were made up of four riders, with Nichols winning both (Cornell graduate Lauren Wu and Dartmouth graduate Stacy Klein swapped second and third, with Wu a red ribbon winner in alumni flat and Klein second in alumni fences. Rian Harris became the first rider in many years to not actually have an Ivy League undergraduate degree yet be offered the opportunity to compete in the all-Ivy's. This is because Harris is going for a graduate degree at Princeton. A graduate of William & Mary College, Harris was fourth in both alumni divisions. Though listed in the program as an alumni entry, Princeton Head Coach Ashton Phillips did not compete in the alumni classes. Had he done so Phillips would be the first person ever to ride at an all-Ivy show with no undergraduate or graduate degree nor an attempt to receive either from an Ivy League school. The 1989 Virginia Intermont College graduate would have been allowed to compete as an active Ivy League Head Coach, but Phillips did not have his show clothes with him).

Though they took the pink ribbon home, Princeton was actually sixth with 14 points. Like Yale the Tigers had only five riders in tow. Meredith Bock, a senior from Los Angeles, California was the first Princeton rider to compete. Bock was third in the third section of open fences, earning what turned out to be Princeton's top ribbon of the day in the process.

What's this? A Columbia jacket and a Princeton hat? Princeton junior K.L. Huang (on right) left New Zealand for Old Nassau three years ago. Columbia sophomore Peng Deng (on left) knew Huang in New Zealand and made the trip to Morningside Heights a year later. One would get the impression they know each other well! Deng was third in beginner walk-trot-canter for the Lions while Huang was fourth in novice fences and sixth in novice flat for the Tigers.

The University of Pennsylvania finished the day with 13 points. The Quakers were missing both a walk-trot rider and Head Coach Dawne Morrone, who had a prior obligation (it seems everytime this writer sees the Quakers Coach Morrone is someplace else. I sure hope I see you in Lexington with walk-trotter Jessica Olli, second at Zones six days ago, and the first Penn rider in three seasons to advance past that point - Editor). For a while senior Katie Kuzinevich had the Quakers' best ribbon, with fourths in both of her open classes. However Allison Lee earned a third in novice flat to claim Penn's top placing.

Ancient Eight?: Though the Ivy League is made up of eight schools, Harvard University has not fielded an IHSA team since the 2007-08 season and thus did not take part in today's show. Surprisingly only about five of the 14 all-Ivy shows since 1997 were made up of riders from all eight schools. From 1997 until roughly 2002 Penn did not take part, and on several recent occasions Harvard has been the missing piece.

How does one gain entry into a "Championship Class?": For most of the divisions, the top two in each section were called back to compete in a class of between six and eight riders for a new set of placings in the championship classes. In the case of the intermediate divisions, the top three in each section were called back (this was because only two sections of each took place). The advanced walk-trot-canter and the beginner walk-trot-canter riders were called back for a "Walk-Trot-Canter Championship" while all six walk-trot riders had the opportunity to line up, receive one set of placings, then switch horses, go again and line-up for their championship placings (and only third and fourth place changed from one walk-trot ride to the next). Save for 2004 when there was some pre-show confusion as to the Championship division process there have been championship classes at all the all-Ivy shows.
