WESTERN SEMIFINALS RESULTS MARCH 24TH AND 25TH IN OCALA, FL
Over the course of six team classes not one school earned two red ribbons
and only one school earned two blue ribbons. That school is Oregon State
University, which took the lead for good through the third team class and
went on to score a 26-18 win over both Alfred University and Michigan State
University. Despite finishing below sixth in two of the first three team
classes the Saxons won the third tiebreaker with the Spartans for Reserve
Champion, which was points in team reining. Kalcy O'Keefe had won that
class for Alfred, which raised the Saxons from last to fourth through four
team classes. With only one team class to go four teams were tied for third
with 13 points. However Phoebe Huberty of Michigan State was able to win
team novice western to vault the Spartans from 11 to 18 points and overtake
everyone except Alfred (which earned a second in novice) and Champion Oregon
State (which already had 22 points and was assured of no worse than second
place going into novice). While Oregon State has regularly sent a full
western team to IHSA Nationals it will be Michigan State's first appearance
since 2009 and Alfred's first since 2008 which was the Saxons' only prior
visit with a full western team to an IHSA Nationals event.
Riders who place first through fourth in individual classes at IHSA Western
Semifinals advance to IHSA Nationals in Raleigh, North Carolina May 3-6, 2012.
The top three teams at Western Semifinals also advance to IHSA Nationals.
