Though the fence is painted with the word "Vixen" (singular) the Sweet Briar College school nickname is "The Vixens" (plural).
Sweet Briar won their second consecutive show on November 12th and opened up a subtantial lead in the Zone 4, Region 2 team standings (photo perhaps

SINGLE DIGITS TURN TO DOUBLE DIGITS IN SEVERAL REGION'S TEAM RACES
Due to time constraints this recap and preview
will be shorter than most.
Sacred Heart University was the story of the
weekend last weekend, scoring 49 points to move 28
point ahead of defending Region Champion
University of Connecticut in Zone 2, Region 5.
The Pioneers joined Brown University, the
University of Vermont and Cazenovia College as
the only IHSA programs so far this season to score
a perfect 49. This was also the first time Sacred
Heart had ever posted a perfect score. More
importantly a Region Race that was close resembles
a blowout after the one-sided result.
Had Sacred Heart not scored 49 the story of the
weekend would have been Sweet Briar College. The
Vixens won at home 37-28 over Randolph College
while Washington & Lee was third with 23. If you
follow Zone 4, Region 2 you will notice who is not
in the top three more so than who is. Bridgewater
College went into the weekend trailing Sweet Briar
91-89 but now trail by at least 16 (we have not
published a set of points we received due to
discrepencies with a previous set of points from
the President College - Editor). Lynchburg
College finished the weekend over 20 out while
Hollins remained in fourth overall and did not win
a Region 2 fall show for the first time since the
1990's. Needless to say Sweet Briar leads
everyone but Bridgewater by 20 or more through
four shows. If it is an "every three years" thing
then the Vixens are destined to win. SBC took
teams to Nationals in '06 and '09. If they do it
again in '12 the Vixens will have accomplished
this with three different IHSA Coaches (Krista
Steinmetz, Emily Miller and Ian McCartney,
respectively).
St. Lawrence defeated Cazenovia on the 12th and
SUNY - Geneseo on the 13th with Cazenovia third to
take over first place in Zone 2, Region 2 hunter
seat. The Saints host on Saturday (where they won
on October 30th) while the Wildcats host a day
later (returning to the scene of their 49 score on
opening day. Here the race is still a race, with
St. Lawrence holding a single digit lead on the
Wildcats.
The University of Delaware defeated Washington
College 40-23. This keeps UDel undefeated which
makes them one of a dying breed. Cornell also
kept their season unblemished after winning at
home with 42 points. Mount Holyoke
had tied with UMass-Amherst at the season opener
in Zone 1, Region 3 but did not lose outright
until the Minutemen won 43-39 on the 12th.
Though we only found out about it after another
Zone 3, Region 3 hunter seat show took place,
defending National Champion Centenary College lost
for the first time since last March. Just as
Marist College was an unlikely winner at that time
Sarah Lawrence College was a complete shock as
high point when Pace University hosted on November
6th. When the Gryphons co-hosted the season
opener with Drew, Centenary outscored them 45-12
(keep in mind Sarah Lawernce did not have riders
in intermediate flat or open fences on October
2nd). In spite of the loss Centenary is still
up by 73 points on the United States Military
Academy. For the moment this is the widest-known
margin between first and second for any hunter
seat team race nationwide.
We also leared that Tufts returned to the top
in Zone 1, Region 4. The Jumbos defeated
Stonehill 41-40 at Mount Ida on the 6th in what
has been a very entertaining race. Through five
shows Tufts has led three times but trailed
twice, having been behind Stonehill after two
shows and Boston University after four. Now
finished with showing until the Spring (excluding
invitational events) Tufts leads Stonehill
176-173 while Boston University is very much
alive with 166.
Returning to the 12th/13th weekend two races
are turning heads if only because schools without
a recent region title are ahead by double figures.
Stony Brook University continues to lead New York
University by 18 points in Zone 2, Region 4 after
both schools tied for reserve behind host C.W.
Post on the 13th. Stony Brook, which has had only
two head coaches in their 44-plus-year history,
last won a region title in 2004. That was perhaps
the 18th Region Title for original Seawolves head
coach George Lukemire, who coached the 1971 Stony
Brook team to a National Championship before there
were 'Regions' for what would raise that total to
19. If the Seawolves can hang on through the two
Region 4 spring shows it would be the first title
under current head coach Myrna Treuting (who as
Myrna McElhiney rode for Lukemire and the
Seawolves in the 1980's) who took over in the fall
of 2006. Meanwhile Rutgers University won or tied
for first for the third time in four Zone 3,
Region 4 shows. The Scarlet Knights prevailed
36-35 over Lafayette College (the latter without
an intermediate flat rider on the point card) in
an all-region event on the 13th and now lead the
Leopards by 13 through six shows. For the first
time since 1999 Rutgers goes into the winter break
leading their region. In their history the
Scarlet Knights have won three region titles, all
bunched together between 1984 and 1987. If Rutgers
can stay ahead over somewhere between two and four
spring shows they would send a full hunter seat
team to the post-season for the first time in a
quarter century. It would also be Rutgers first
time at Zones since the show was added between
'Regionals' and 'Nationals' in the Spring of 1990.
Several regions did not send us an update during
the week, including one involving the two hunter
seat shows involving the University of Findlay.
However it is known that the host Oilers won the
English season opener 46-31 over Lake Erie College
on the 12th. However the next day Findlay was
third (the team totals, as well as who was first
and second, are unknown for now).
As for the last big weekend of IHSA shows in
calendar year 2011 the schedule is so bloated that
once again we throw a 'comment' about each after
the show date and location below. Perhaps due to
the early easter this season a great many schools
are hosting shows throughout November that
otherwise might have taken place in the spring.
Or perhaps people are tired of potential snow
threatening their spring contests. In any event
it has been more challenging than usual to stay
caught up with the IHSA this November. Since we
cannot always post the results in a timely fashion
please feel free to become a fan of the
CampusEquestrian.com facebook page and tell us how
you or your team did that day.
Stay warm, keep hydrated, don't forget your
apparel and enjoy the shows!
