2010 ZONE 8 ZONES RESULTS
The first-ever IHSA Zones show made up of five regions featured
an exciting team competition that went down to the final class.
While Stanford University had already clinched a place at Nationals
for the sixth year in a row prior to the start of the final team
class, the University of Colorado at Boulder finished ahead of the
University of Southern California in team open flat to take second
place and advance a full hunter seat team to IHSA Nationals for the
first time. The Buffalos were in second for much of the contest
but saw Southern Cal close the gap to only a point over the sixth
and seventh team classes before ultimately surviving. Three CU
riders also advanced on an individual basis, tops for any Zone 8
team over the two-day event. It was the University of Colorado at
Boulder's first time competing in a Zone 8 Zones event as all the
schools in Colorado (and Wyoming) had previously been members of
Zone 7.
"It was great to go to a new area to compete, the show was well
done and everyone was very welcoming of our Region as 'newcomers,'"
says University of Colorado at Boulder Head Coach Jill Pelzel.
"I am very proud of my team for their positive attitude, good
sportsmanship, and their desire to be the best. It was great to
see some of the more seasoned girls on my team helping the less
experienced girls get ready, loaning clothes, and fixing hair, not
just with their teammates, but to the other kids in our region. I
also have to give a thank you to all of my team that stayed behind
and ran the biggest fundraiser of our season successfully."
With only sixteen individual undergraduate rides advancing from
Zones, six came from new kid on the block Region 5 (three from
CU, two from the University of Wyoming and one from Colby Community
College). Regions 1 and 2 managed four riders each inside the top
two, with Stanford from the former and Arizona State from the
latter each able to advance multiple riders. Regions 3 and 4
advanced one individual rider each.
Rachel Kolb's win in team novice flat put Stanford ahead by a
point through three team classes. Cardinal riders then won three
of the next five team classes as Stanford led the rest of the way.
Stanford finished with 45 points (ten more than CU) and has now won
six consecutive Zone 8 Zones shows.
The Class-by-Class results of 2011 Zone 8 Zones, held in Pomona,
California, listed in the order in which they were held. All but
the final six classes listed were held on Saturday, April 2nd, 2011

top two riders in each individual class and the top two hunter seat
teams in the team competition advanced to IHSA Nationals May 5th
through 8th in Lexington, Kentucky.
