2011 ZONE 5 ZONES RESULTS
Previously a member of Zone 4, Virginia Intermont College won their
first-ever appearance at a Zone 5 Zones show. Though the final score
indicated a tie with Savannah College of Art & Design VI was the
winner based on the IHSA's third tiebreaker which is points over
fences. SCAD's second allowed the Bees to advance a full hunter seat
team to IHSA Nationals for the first time in program history.
"It was amazing first of all to just make it there, but I know we
worked hard to get there and deserved it," says SCAD Coach Ashley
Kelly. "I was trying to not keep point to point results during the
show so that I could just focus on the team's riding but I knew we
were doing well, (I) just didn't realize until after the last class
that we were tied with VI! I thought we were going to ride well but
to tie with VI was an accomplishment in itself, much less that we are
going to NATIONALS! The team is extactic, we know where we need to
improve and are going to be working very hard."
Zone 5, Region 3 faired the best individually, with six riders
advancing to Nationals. McKenzie Armour of the College of Charleston
was a winner in individual intermediate flat and second in novice
fences. Thanks to Armour Region 3 has seven individual rides at
2011 Nationals. Region 4 was nearly as good, with five rides
clinched at the National show.
"I was impressed with the riding. Zone 5 has some awesome riding,"
says Virginia Intermont Head Coach Eddie Federwisch. "The term
'southern hospitality' was taken to a new standard. (University of
the South Head Coach) Megan Taylor was unbelievable in terms of
organization and going the extra mile for all the riders and teams.
It was also the first time I have ever been involved in a Zones with
four teams and that extra white ribbon adds another dimension to the
competition. Those four points between a first and a fourth is a
large gap. We at VI feel very blessed to heading back to Nationals
for a 12th time in a row."
The Class-by-Class results of 2011 Zone 5 Zones, held in Sewanee,
Tennessee on April 2nd, 2011, listed in the order in which they were
held. The top two riders in each individual class and the top two
