Harrisburg, Penna. - On her fourth and last try at the USA/Pessoa & Miller's National Hunt
Seat Equitation Medal Finals, Maggie Jayne prevailed, winning the
prestigious medal. The 18-year-old from Elgin, IL had her best previous
finish at fourth two years ago. Jayne also won the first phase of the
BET/USA Junior Jumper Speed class Thursday night.
Jayne distinguished herself early in the class of 254 riders, going
22nd.
"I like singles and rollbacks (changes of direction)," she said.
Apparently Grappa, the 13-year-old Hanovarian she rode, liked it too. A
veteran campaigner, he won two years ago with his owner Sarah Willeman.
"We wanted a course to test the basics, not a 'follow the dots'
course," said Kip Rosenthal who co-designed the course with fellow judge
George H. Morris. "It was a handy hunter course right out of the Sixties."
Translated that meant there was only one measured line, the in-and-out; every
other fence the rider had to find the distance and ride their horse.
"Maggie rode the course. She has beautiful basics. She was neat and
efficient," said Rosenthal. "She was on top after the first 50, and stayed
there throughout the day. On the second course, she rode to win."
"She was better in the second round," added Morris. "She went for
broke and no one went out to beat her."
Behind Jayne, the field of 22 reshuffled itself slightly. The 11th
place Kathryn Volk moved up to 4th. Katie Gardner, Westlake Village, CA,
snatched second from an eighth place call back. Derek Braun, Ocala, FL, held
onto third, his position in the call back.
Required by the rules to further test four final contestants, judges
chose a simple, perfunctory walk, trot, canter, halt test.
"I was very surprised the course eliminated as many as it did. Scores were
lower as the day wore on. I think the second half of the class got psyched
out," said Morris. There were 130 refusals. Dropped rails could also
eliminate riders. Reserve champion Katie Gardner made the final call back
despite knocking down one pole in the first round. The class took just under
11 hours to complete. Riders came from thirty-one states, Ontario, British
Columbia and Bermuda. The 57th Penn National Show was held from October 10-19, 2002 at Farm Show Arena, Harrisburg, Penna.

On Saturday evening October 19, the 100 regional Maclay finalists enjoyed
a party with music, dancing, food, and exhibitor gift bags containing CD players, "ASPCA-Maclay Finalist"
embroidered CD cases, and a variety of other items.
On Sunday October 20, riders squared
off in the first round of competition, narrowing the field of competitors to the top 15 who would advance to the
Finals at the MCI Center on Thursday, October 24.
Heading into the final competition at the WIHS, the top 6 of the 15 finalists were Erin Stewart, Jamie Taylor,
Kristy McCormack, Maggie Jayne, Jennifer Berol Bliss, and Derek Braun. Judges Frank Willard, Phil deVita
and Christine Tauber had their work cut out for them with the high quality of riding in the group of 2002 finalists.
Stewart and Taylor were called back for further testing. Though both riders rode beautiful trips, the judges were
unanimous in their decision to award the championship to Stewart.
"When we tested these two, neither child made a mistake of any kind, and the numerical difference would have
been 92 and 86. The 86 [Taylor] did nothing wrong, but the winner won the class," said Willard.
Katie Gardiner made the most impressive move up the list, entering the final competition at the MCI Center in
13th place and finishing in 3rd place.
