STANFORD WINS ZONE 8 TEAM COMPETITION WHILE CALIFORNIA SCHOOLS DOMINATE INDIVIDUAL PLACINGS
Pomona, CA - It was misting in Southern California before the show started,
but thankfully a move to the covered ring was not necessary. Under overcast
skies and temperatures in the low '70's Stanford University won early and
often, scoring six blue ribbons in the team competition en route to 50 points
and their second consecutive Zone 8 Zones Championship. Open rider (and Zone 8,
Region 1 Cacchione representative) Katherine 'Kat' Bechtel won both team open
classes for the Cardinal while Margaux Bennett won team novice and advanced to
Nationals individually with a second in individual walk-trot-canter. Of all
five Zones shows to take place around the country on April 7th, Stanford
scored the most points, earning two more than Centenary College and defending
National Champs Mount Holyoke College.
Riders from schools in Regions 1 and 2 of Zone 8 took 15 of the top 16
individual prizes, with Helen Speidel of the University of Washington the only
undergraduate rider not from a California school to advance to Nationals
(Speidel, who rides for the University of Washington, won the
individual novice flat). Stanford advanced four riders, while the University
of California at San Diego advanced three. The University of
Southern California advanced three rides, with two of them belonging to
Trojan open rider Braidee Foote, who won individual open flat while placing
second to UCSD's Cameron Bradley in individual open fences. Stanford owned
all the divisions below novice, earning High Point and Reserve honors in
individual walk-trot and individual walk-trot-canter, while also winning the
team classes for these divisions.
Though the winners have a long trek to Massachusetts ahead of them, the
good news is that 2008 Nationals will be not far west of the Fairplex, at the
Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank, which hopefully will cut down on
travel time and expenses.
